Bio

Rhyannon was called to the bar and joined the firm in 2014. She is aware that family law matters can be painful and trying. Her goal is to provide her clients with the competent and compassionate legal guidance needed to help manage their emotions and effectively resolve their family law matters through negotiation, settlement, and when necessary litigation. Her practice areas include a wide variety of family law issues and she is open to taking new clients from Edmonton as well as jurisdictions.

She has appeared before administrative tribunals as well as the Provincial Court and the Court of Queen’s Bench. Rhyannon is skilled at legal research and most recently co-authored a paper on Matrimonial Property with Marie Gordon Q.C.

Rhyannon has a keen interest in access to justice and is an active volunteer with the Edmonton Community Legal Centre’s civil and family law projects where she provides legal assistance to low income individuals and gives free public presentations on various family and civil law topics. In the past, Rhyannon engaged in similar work with Student Legal Services of Edmonton and Legal Aid Alberta.

Rhyannon has a diverse background. She was employed by the Alberta Government doing policy and legal research as a member of the Legislative Reform Department and with the Edmonton Crown Prosecutor’s Office. While working for the Prosecutor’s Office Rhyannon assisted with Queen’s Bench trials and wrote a factum for a successful appeal to the Court of Appeal.

Prior to starting her legal career, Rhyannon obtained a Master’s Degree in Clinical Social Work. She then worked for a number of years in various capacities providing case management, psychotherapeutic, and crisis intervention services to adults, children and families, in areas including: addictions, mental health, and trauma, before deciding to pursue her law degree.

During law school, Rhyannon was the recipient of many prestigious scholarships, grants, and awards including: The Honourable Mr. Justice Andrekson Memorial Scholarship, Justice Cecelia Johnstone Equality Award, J. Patrick Stopa Access to Justice Scholarship, and the Gerald L. Gall Global Community Service Grant. In 2012, Rhyannon was invited to present her research at Simon Fraser University’s FREDA Centre for Research on Violence Against Women and Children’s National Research Conference.

Before joining the firm Rhyannon completed a prestigious articling position as a law clerk with the Nunavut Court of Justice. She worked closely with the Chief Justice and provided support to all members of the judiciary and Court staff. Her legal research, analysis, and communication skills were vastly improved by her work with the Court.
