Tracy C. Brown
Family Lawyer
I am the principal lawyer with Brown Law Group, a Family & Divorce Law firm in Edmonton. Besides being a Registered Collaborative Family Lawyer, I am a Mediator and Arbitrator, and I represent children in Family disputes. I would describe myself as a passionate and compassionate advocate for reasonable resolutions in Family disputes, guided by fairness and the ‘best interests of children’. I have never shied away from the Courtroom, but it must be the last resort, and only after all settlement efforts have been exhausted.
The Collaborative process provides a facilitated framework for the resolution of separation and divorce issues that steers you away from the adversarial potholes so common in the aftermath of family breakdown. A Collaborative process doesn't mean that a divorce or separation process will be easy, but it will almost always be less stressful and less likely to cause harm to children who inevitably get caught up in the process playing out around them.
In addition to the Collaborative Law training which includes mediation and interest-based negotiations, I am trained in child-inclusive mediation, meeting with children, parenting coordination, arbitration, working with high-conflict people, parent-child contact problems, and personality disorders. I believe that Family lawyers have an ethical obligation to “do no harm” to the children caught in the middle of these disputes, and to manage the legal process and our own Clients to keep the best interests of the children always at the forefront.
With the experience of having litigated Family disputes, I have seen the financial and emotional devastation, and the collateral damage to children. If you can stay out of Court you should. Collaborative Law makes that a firm commitment.
Originally from Edmonton, I am a graduate of the University of Toronto and Osgoode Hall Law School. Before becoming a lawyer in Ontario and Alberta in 2010, I worked for some 20 years in leadership positions in immigrant and refugee services, international development, human rights and managing humanitarian aid organizations in war-ravaged countries in the Americas and Africa. In many ways these pre-Lawyer experiences prepared me well to maneuver through the minefields of Family disputes.
